Pentingkah pujian?

Assalamualaikum.

Rasanya macam sudah lama tidak menulis dalam bahasa melayu secara formal. Kali ini, izinkan kalam hamba ditulis dalam bahasa ibunda dengan keformalan yang maksimum.hehe

Bercerita tentang target dan pencapaian. Pentingkah pujian daripada orang sekeliling untuk kita mencapai target yang kita impikan? Jawapan saya: YA. Sangat penting.

Jawapan ini bukan berdasarkan kajian tetapi melalui pengalaman. Usia hanya 25 tetapi telah banyak peringkat yang seusia ini lalui, terutamanya dalam lingkungan study.

Bermula dengan sekolah rendah. Waktu itu, saya antara pelajar yang dikenali guru-guru. Entah kenapa. Mungkin kerana menjawat jawatan pengawas dan sentiasa menjalankan tugas dengan teliti dan tegas, mungkin juga kerana keputusan peperiksaan yang baik, mungkin juga selalu membantu cikgu membahagi-bahagikan susu sekolah? hehe

Menjadi timbalan ketua pengawas yang dijawat rakan baik saya ketika itu, saya antara mereka yang bertuah kerana dimasukkan kedalam kelas pertama dalam darjah 6. Bertuah kerana kami mendapat tumpuan penuh dalam usaha mencapai target 5A dalam UPSR.

Saya masih ingat, pada hari keputusan UPSR di umumkan, saya dan rakan-rakan pengawas mengadakan lawatan ke kilang. Tak ingat adakah ia kilang susu, pepsi atau biskut. Lawatan sambil belajar. Apa yang dipelajari di kilang tu saya pun taktau. Balik dari lawatan, keputusan sudah dipampang di papan kenyataan.

Ketika tekun mencari nama pada tampalan kertas yang agak tinggi untuk pelajar darjah 6, saya terpaksa melangut dan tercari-cari disebalik tangan guru-guru yang turut melihat sama. Saya akhirnya terjumpa kelibat nama Nurul Iffah Sainuri. Pada ketika yang sama, ada jari yang besar menunjuk ke nama saya. " Ini yang aku nda sangka. Macam mana dia boleh dapat straight.." Kata cikgu itu kepada kawannya, iaitu juga cikgu saya. Saya menoleh. Dia kaget terkejut. Saya buat muka tak puas hati. Dia lantas berkata " Eh, sori- sori. Cikgu nda sedar kamu ada disini.."

Cikgu itu cikgu Bahasa Melayu saya.

Berikutan dengan keputusan baik saya dalam UPSR, saya melangkah ke sekolah berasrama penuh KK. Itupun setelah memohon untuk pengambilan kedua. Nampak sangat sekolah rendah tak pernah cadangkan nama saya untuk masuk ke sekolah ni. Sampai terpaka memohon sendiri.

Disini pula alkisahnya, rakan saya seorang pelajar semenanjung hendak balik ke kampung halamannya, Kelantan. Maka kami yang semuanya berada dalam tingkatan yang sama semua mula bersedih dengan pemergian rakan ini, termasuklah seorang guru ni. Beliau yang merangkap warden asrama, yang selalu mengejutkan saya selepas light off untuk memastikan semua ahli bilik berada di katil masing-masing. " Kalau kawan kamu tu pindah, dah takdalah student muslim yang pandai di sekolah ni.", katanya kepada rakan-rakan saya di kelas sebelah. Rakan saya pula menjawab. "Iffah kan ada.. Iffah tu kan pandai."

Jawab guru ini pula "Tak.. Iffah tu tak boleh". Kawan-kawan tergamam. Mereka pula memberitahu hal ini kepada saya setelah balik ke asrama.

Guru itu ustazah saya.

Dan pada tahun yang sama, saya mendapat tempat kedua keseluruhan dalam tingkatan.

Beralih pula pada zaman universiti. Kami kelompok pelajar kedua yang menjalani program baru perubatan yang dianjurkan pihak universiti. Jadi sebelum kami, ada sekolompok pelajar lagi yang menjadi guinea pig pertama, kami guinea pig yang kedua. Belum ada pelajar yang grad, jadi program baru ini belum diketahui keberkesanannya. Oh ya, program ini program PBL. Problem-Based Learning. Masih baru di universiti kami, walaupun ianya telah banyak diaplikasi dalam bidang perubatan di negara lain termasuk Malaysia.

"What is the molecule of IgG?" Tanya doktor. Semua pelajar diam, tiada yang menjawab. Jujurnya kami tidak pernah belajar Biochemistry sehingga selesai. Biochemistry hanya diajar dalam kadar yang sedikit, bak kata doktor yang mengajar subjek ini terdahulu, "kamu hanya perlu tahu ini sahaja. Yang lain tu tak perlu tahu, ini sahaja yang masuk silibus dan ini sahaja yang akan keluar dalam peperiksaan". Kembali kepada doktor yang bertanya soalan tadi.. "This is Manchester Student. I never believe in this program from the start!". Kami semua tercengang. Marah pun ada. Apa doktor ingat silibus ni kami yang buat, suka hati nak buang itu ini. Tiba-tiba kami pulak dipersalahkan sebab tak pernah belajar benda yang dia tanya.

Kepada guru-guru diluar sana, yang ikhlas ataupun tidak mendidik anak-anak murid untuk berjaya, suntiklah semangat untuk mereka. Saya jujurnya sedih mengingat saat-saat diri ini tidak diyakini para guru, sedangkan saya mampu. Saya bernasib baik kerana mempunyai family dan persekitaran yang positif. Bayangkan jika orang sekeliling juga tidak pernah memandang positif pada saya, saya rasa saya akan hanyut terumbang ambing dipukul ombak entah ke mana.

"Tanamkanlah keyakinan positif pada orang-orang yang anda cintai, maka mereka akan menciptakan yang terbaik melebihi apa yang anda yakinkan", kata Dr Aga, ESQ 165.

Tak susah beri pujian dan keyakinan pada orang lain. Tak ke comforting bila orang lain puji kita? Tak ke rasa lebih bersemangat? Jangan jadi punca masa depan orang lain musnah bila kata-kata kamu yang bunuh semangatnya.

Station 1:

Dermatology: Psoriasis examination.

Station 2:

Andrology semen analysis-- hemospermia, what are the causes, what are the investigations

Station 3:

Research & methodology--meta analysis, What are other type of study, and its strength.

Station 4: CT of maxillary fracture, its investigation and treatment. Membrane over tonsils, its DD, investigation and treatment of each.

Station 5: Corneal reflex examination, its pathway,causes of corneal vascularization, and causes of corneal hypoesthesia

Station 6: Hypopyon ulcer, its predisposing factors, signs of hypopyon ulcer,

Station 7: Schoitz tonometer (just tell what is the name of the instrument), other test to measure IOP, what are the central and peripheral field defect in glaucoma. DD of acute diminution of vision. DD of red painful eye.

Station 8: History taking of atopic dermatitis, explain its prognosis to patient

Station 9: Rinne and Weber test. PTA. DD of CHL, SNHL and mixed HL

Station 10: OM history taking, state the investigation and management

All the best to all.. Truthfully, this semester is not an easy semester to go through. Too many to cover in too little of time.

Exam yg gila. Untuk semester 10. Tahun kami, sem 10 consist of ENT, dermatology, andrology, research and methodoly dan opthalmology. Dengar2, tahun depan research & methodoly akan di anjak ke tahun 6.

So, supaya tak lupa dan mudah untuk rujukan adik2, here it goes..

MCQ:

ENT: Soalan macam hapa.. klu coordinator untuk ENT masih Dr Degwi, sila khatam buku yg ditulis oleh beliau dan juga khatam buku mcq yg ditulis beliau. Rasanya semua soalan finals haritu kuar dari buku dia. Dan bila contohnya ada chapter yg tak masuk dalam syllabus pun, cover by yourself. Yang tak penah belajar pun kluar habis-habisan oleh doktor. Dan adik2 ye, jangan mengada2 nak escape kelas ENT. Susah jadinya bila tak tengok clinical cases.

ANDRO&DERM: Yang ni, asalkan datang kelas, datang clinical training, dan DISCUSSION PBL, insyaallah boleh jawab.

OPTHAL: Yang ini pulak, kena teliti baca sebijik2 tulisan dalam buku department tu. Yang kecik2 tu la yg doktor suka.

RESEARCH: Dtg je kelas, konfem score. Tahan je la ngantuk kat kelas tu. Yang penting, setiap lecture yg kena bagi tu, at least fahamkan sekali. Sekali je pun dah ok. Pastu nak dekat2 exam, buat soalan spot sendiri untuk training.

ENT: Sekali lagi, Dr Degwi memang anggap kita terer. So, bersedia.. belajar ENT sungguh2. Dia bagi situation of old man ada Rt CHL, otoscope show retraction. Weber lateralized to Rt side. Patient ada mass 3cm on neck, which is firm and mobile. Then, he develop regurgitation at nose on drinking. Soalan tanya, the diagnosis, investigation, DD, the primary choice of treatment ( ini 6 markah), dan other treatment for the disease. Dan jugak where is the primary site. Soalan lain, list other dss yg buat weber laterized to Rt side.

OPTHAL: Sudden loss of vision kat org tua, ada htn, hx of smoking. On examination, there's cherry red spot. Give the diagnosis, give the predisposing factor, the etiology, the treatment. DD of other cherry red spot. What intraorbital lesion caused by systemic htn (DD).

DERM: psoriasis and its treatment. DD of infectious circinate lesion and its treatment, dan non infectious circinate lesion. Lagi, dia nak DD of scaly scalp dan its main C/P.

Red eye

Ophthalmology rounds.

In class today, we were discussing about causes of acute red painful eyes. I mean red eye as in inflamed eye.

Eye appears red simply because of dilated blood vessels. Blood vessel are usually very thin and rarely seen in normal people. The big groups on classifying the red eye or sometimes called pink eye is classified into; conjuctivitis (inflammation of conjunctiva) or cyclitis (inflammation of ciliary body).

Conjuctivitis' red eye is much more 'redder' than cyclitis simply because conjuctiva lies most superficial in eye anatomy, whereas ciliary body lies deeper. And simply to differentiate them both, just observe where the vessels come from; from around the iris outward, or the other way around. Of course the latter points to cyclitis....(hurm, enough about this details)

One thing interesting: Doc asks, 'have u seen the eyes of actors in movies? They are very white, clean & clear, right? Is it natural? Noooooo.. they keep putting eye drops to shrink the vessels so it wont be seen, like ours.. but it wont stay long. There is something called 'rebound hyperemia'. At one point, their eye vessel will dilate to the point more than normal people does. You got served!

Of many2 causes listed, our doctor raised a question that patient may come and complained of, which sounds. "my child doesn't have red eyes".. And I got myself thinking, why come complaining when there's nothing wrong about your child?

They were actually talking about the red eye effects when you capture photos with flash. It is called the 'red reflex'. As we all experienced, our eyes will turn red in photos. How annoying.. but after reading the description below, think again!

Red reflex is the reflection of light from outside into the layer beneath retina which is rich in blood supply. To reach this, one's eye need to be clear, and blood vessels should be normal. As the name suggest, red reflex reflects red / orange color from the layer rich in blood (the choroid). This is what happen in normal person.

A diseased person may lost this reflex and substituted by another reflex called the 'white reflex'.

This reflex reflects white color when shone light. This happens in conditions like cataracts, retinoblastoma, retinal infection, or retinal detachment. I just want to stress on retinoblastoma because its the most common cause of ocular malignancy in childhood. As other cancer, it is caused by mutated gene. Although not highly fatal, it can cause malfunction of the eye.

Other than red and white reflex, there's also a 'black reflex'.. Scarring and bleeding inside eye can block the transmission of light and reflect no light at all. simply that.

A motivational talk for the future doctors by Dr Mohamed Hatta Mohamed Tarmizi, an O&G specialist from Hospital Likas, Kota Kinabalu. What's more exciting is that he is a graduate from Mansoura University, the university where i'm pursuing my dream at. A very great motivator he is.

Being a foreign medical student who are already labelled by the locals beforehand as incompetent, he advised us all not to feel inferior when facing challenges during houseman-ship.

"What u learn and what they learned are the same, the only thing they knew better is the system hospitals in Malaysia are using. That's why u see they can adapt faster. Regarding knowledge, medics syllabus are all the same. "

He already went through the hardships and so many of our seniors regardless where they graduated from, so why worry? If they can make it through, why can't we? And even if they couldn't make it, why not believe in our strength to strive it?-- this is all him talking.

Being a doctor is all about sacrifice, I guess if it wasn't us, who else will volunteer to a job this torturing.. Allah had chosen us for a reason. He knew best!

The 5 most important thing a doctor should have are;

Attitude

Skills

Knowledge

And everything above all, remember your creator~ always!

Acquire this all and you are good to go!

Dalam bahasa arab, kalau nak cakap terima kasih, kata 'Syukran'. Orang akan balas balik, kata 'afwan'. Tapi adat orang sini, bila kita kata 'syukran', dorang akan balas balik 'syukrillah'. Syukur ke atas Allah. Simple perkataannya, tapi maksudnya dalam. Harap jangan hanya berkata-kata dan mendengar saja, biar dizahirkan dalam perbuatan sehari-harian.

"Dan (ingatlah juga) tatkala Tuhanmu memaklumkan: Sesungguhnya jika kamu bersyukur, pasti Kami akan menambah (nikmat) kepadamu, dan jika kamu mengingkari (nikmatKu), maka sesungguhnya azab Ku sangat pedih " Ibrahim ayat 7

Kesian bila tengok orang yang tinggal dalam kedhaifan macam ni, tapi kesian dengan yang ini, banyak lagi yang tak berumah, tidur di tepi2 jalan. Sekarang musim sejuk dah menghampiri. Macam mana agaknya mereka yang kurang bernasib baik ni hidup dalam kesejukan..

Pintu dekat box elektrik tu pintu keluar masuk rumah. SYUKUR waktu masing2 berselimut keluar dari pintu tu, takda yang cedera. SYUKUR jugak box gas dan saluran gas yang melintang sepanjang dinding tu tak bocor dan meletup! Allah sayang sangat dengan hambaNya..

Baby 4 bulan kat belakang tu pulak baby kepada Puan Quia, Aqil Waiedz bin Abdul Rahman. Hidup kami di sini diceriakan dengan kelahiran baby2 comel.. Syukur. Nikmat Allah bagi :)

Lirik nasyid ni memang best, tapi lagu dia tak berapa syhadu. Tak layan sangat.

Cintu itu cahaya sanubari. Allah yang bagi. Dia tiupkan ke hati hambaNya supaya ada rasa kasih dan sayang, supaya dunia aman sejahtera, tenang. Bukan semua dikurniakan cinta pada masa yang dikehendaki, maka syukurilah anugerah yang datang. Mungkin naik mungkin turun rasa cinta di hati, hakikat manusia kerdil dan kecil.

Beristikharahlah kita dalam apa jugak keputusan yang akan diambil. Percaya yang Allah maha tahu, maha adil. Semoga yang keruh dijernihkan, yang kabur diterangkan, yang jauh didekatkan, yang tersembunyi dizahirkan. Pintaku ya Rabbi, tunjukkan. Sabar itu payah, susah. Tapi bersabarlah, takkan terasa harum mewangi jika tak dinyalakan setanggi, takkan terasa manisnya hidup andai tak dilambung gelora.

Gelora dalam hati. Susah dilisankan, sukar dilafazkan. Min albi ilaa albi. Dari hati ke hati, pasti ada yang mengerti. Isk..

Bukankah Tuhan ciptakan malam untuk beradu menanti siang. Bukankah Tuhan titiskan hujan menanti limpah kemarau panjang..?

Baik sibukkan diri dengan study. Exam pun dah menghampiri. Cuma seminggu jaraknya kini untuk meninggalkan ENT. Bakal datang ophtalmology, andrology, dermatology, reasearch and methodology. Tidak lama lagi pelayaran ini. Cuma setahun lagi. Cabaran di hadapan kita tak ketahui. Mungkin lebih dari yang diuji ketika ini.

Ayep, Cik Pah mau ayep ni. Pengubat luka penghibur lara, ayep si jantung hati. Nyummy datang la sini. .

Kenapa pipi ayep begitu bulat sehingga boleh digigit haa..

Ayep, persalinan silk dari china dah dapat. Why not balik nanti aunty buy for u sepersalinan arab pulak. Nak? Ngehee.

A Singer's Story

This is Umm Kulthum. Or pronounced Ummu Kalsum. She is a great star of Egypt back in the 50's. She sang classical Arabic songs and was very talented; as she could reach both the lowest and highest tone possible. She was also a songwriter and an actress. She was born in 1898 and passed in 1975, after years of fame and great achievements. More than 3 decades after her death, she is widely regarded as the greatest female singer in Arab music history.

In a memory of her death, Egypt has built 2 statues of hers, one in Cairo and another one in Mansoura. I was told that Egyptians appreciated her contributions so much because she had helped inspiring previous leaders for freedom & peace. So she is also a nationalist.

Why talk about her?

Of course I'm going to relate her to medicine.

What's with her past medical condition?

She was known a sufferer of 'hyperthyroidism', a hyper-function of thyroid gland disease.

What is thyroid gland and what is its function?

Thyroid gland is a gland located in front of our neck. It functions to metabolize food, growth, increase sensitivity for adrenaline function, helps mental development .....

Having this gland hyper-function, symptoms which may develop includes; awareness of heart beat, excessive sweating, hotness, trembling hands, weight loss, inability to sleep, staring gaze ...

This is the thyroid gland anatomy

Generally, people who suffers this condition could be treated by drugs, or surgery. But I guess there was no available drugs back then. Patients are always treated by surgery in her era.

She actually refused surgery to relieve her symptoms because surgical thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland by operation) is the most common cause of unilateral vocal cord paralysis; from injury of recurrent laryngeal nerve or vagus nerve during the surgery.

Vocal cord is where our voices are produced. Its malfunction may cause changing of voice or as far as losing it. She refused to get this surgery done because of this known complication. (if she was u, would u rather die than risking your voice ? is it worth losing your life ?). Maybe she had her own reason(s). What would yours be?

She lived with this disease for most of her years and died of it. (hyperthyroidism give much burden to the heart. most patients died of heart failure)

Another disease regarding thyroid gland is its hypo-function, termed 'hypothyroidism'. Hypo-function of this gland causes symptoms like; weight gain, cold intolerance, idiot looking face, dry skin, depression, irritability, constipation...

Oprah Winfrey had this disease. She was diagnosed and treated, and she turns slimmer!

It was a long day at kuliyyah. It's almost 3 which indicates Asar prayer is near, but I haven't perform Zohor. More importantly, I have to go to a bookstore nearby to buy an ENT book recommended by our doctor which means rushing home for Zohor is not a choice. So, we (with my housemate) decided to perform the obligation upon His call first, then settle with the book thing.

On our way to the bookstore, we passed by a local restaurant selling 'syawirma' or so called 'kebab'. Since it was long that we both have not eaten this kinda food, with our stomach empty, we say why not grab a bite..

how is this syawirma not tempting..

So there we are, ordering 2 Syawirma, 1 Bechamel, and 1 bottle of mineral water. It was strange that the Arabs keep staring while we enter the dining hall-- maybe it was the first time Malaysian ever stepped into the restaurant. (in our neighborhood of medical students' houses, most never glance at arabic restaurants especially this one which is not so classy. It's always KFC or Pizza Hut or Mo'men or Cook Door , or Slamlek.. etc etc)

While passing by 2 guys which sat near the window facing hospitals, (which I need to cross to go the washroom) they smiled nicely and offered to join them eat.

Of course, I said Syukran, tafaddhal. Thanks, please proceed, then return to my seat.

We eat and we chat and we laugh and we took some photos, and chat and chat and chat till the plates are empty.

Once again, we alternately went to the washroom and then prepare to leave, when the waiter suddenly came to our table and say 'please, sit down'.

We thought he was going to take the bills for payment. Instead, he came with two cans of Coke and serve them in front of us.

: Ihna musy aizin cola. We didn't ask for those..

: (with his egyptian-english) Those two gentlemen over there want to give u this. (pointing to the table of the 2 guys)

What the ?!!

I don't know why it was so embarrassing to look at those guys this time..

We were like covering our faces which blushed~ but we manage to wave as sign of saying our thanks.

That was nice of them to treat an outsiders this way.

This never happen to me before. I suddenly felt like a single lonely girl sitting in a bar, who is offered drinks by a desperate man, as seen on TV! haha

hehe that was it.. and yeah we went to buy the books afterwards of course.

The moral of the story is-- be nice to others so others will be nice to u :)

I suddenly forgot how much I hate it staying here. hehe

Studying in semester 9 requires full attendance to all clinical round, seminar, lectures and skills lab. MCQ questions DOES NOT necessarily comes from the lectures. Most of neurology questions in MCQ comes from the clinical round we attend everyday. To remember cases easily, one should be hardworking enough to wait for doctors and follow him in his daily ward round to know how the case presents, and how it is managed. Though psychiatric rounds might be boring, the exposure is worth it.

Remember! this semester has a looooooooooot of things to be studied! So no last minute study and last minute notes-completing..

For my Abah, Mr Sainuri Hj Yahmin.

I don't have a typical story to write regarding how much u have to suffer to get us something to eat, because u are well educated; and that good job, great salary always awaits u. I also don't have a story of how I behave against your word, because as far as I know, I've always been a good daughter to u :P. Hurmm, and I also don't have a story of how u tried to console me when I did not get what I wanted, because u always thought us of how to be thankful with things we already had. I never cried under your arms because u have always thought me to be strong.

I might not remember how things were when I was little, but there are some recent memories I remembered about u.

Your first forehead kiss right before u travel to Hajj with mak when I was in high school. I cried all the way to Amat's school and home.

The time u show me your Master certificate and ask me to have one too, when I was in Matriks. (which I knew I already disappointed u with my bad marks)

The moment u say "I know it's hard for u to live and study here, I wish I could help make your surrounding better" right before u, mak and akak flew back from visiting me in Egypt.

I might not cry in front of u because of my guilt of having bad marks in Matriks, but I really am sorry from the bottom of my heart. I promise I'll never make u sad anymore.
U also might not see/ hear me cry because i misses u and the whole family whenever I am far but I always did. I cried everytime I left for KL to flew back to Egypt. I cried my eyes out when u all went back from visiting me here.
And in fact I am crying right now, writing this post after mak told me u look sad when none of your children wished u on Father's Day. I am sorry I did it again. Truly am. Also on behalf of the others.
U might never heard me say I love u, but I do.

Without u I won't be having this good background of religion & great school education in one of the best school in Sabah. Without u I won't be having this opportunity to further my studies in this country. Without u I won't be having this comfortable house and life I've been living in. Without u I won't be having good attitude that I get from u. Without u I am nobody.

Thank You for being such a wonderful father. And I'm really sorry for the all the things I did wrong. Happy Father's Day, Abah. I wish u all happiness in the world.

visit to dermatologist

Female pt, 24 yo, 2 weeks history of cubitus (elbow region) itchiness of gradual onset and progressive course. On examination, cubitus appear inflammed, red, raised on palpation.

hehe.. above is brief patient history to be presented to a dermatologist. Patient's name is DrNurolSai. :P

This complain was 3 weeks ago. Before presenting myself to any doctor, I self-medicate myself by buying topical anti histamine--fenistil. Using this topical cream for 1 week made the lesion worse, so I made an appointment with a dermatologist as my tutor advised me to.

this is how the lesion looks like. see the clearly defined edge of the inflammation? ugly. and it itches to death

need dermatologist consultation? i recommend u Dr Soheir. very x100 nice one :)
There were 2 rooms in the clinic, 1 is for dermatology, and another is for orthopedics. Already surprised by the presence of the-other-room doctor, who is our chief tutor in orthopedics who teaches us everyday in class; we were made much more surprised knowing my dermatologist is actually the wife of his!
and she (my dermatologist) is going to teach us in our next semester. What a small world~

Examination was made. Despite her being a woman, i'm still quite embarrassed to expose some hidden parts I always cover. This must be how patients felt when I checked and do examinations on them. What's worse is that they are being examined by 'a group of students' instead of 'one specialist'. At least now I know how it feels like, and what's worst is when we are to do a VE (vaginal exam), PR (per rectal exam) & maybe breast exam or scrotal exams on men.. !
I hope I'll learn more to respect them.

The dermatologist explained that this might be a 'contact dermatitis', if not allergy. She told me to stop using the topical anti histamine, and said "anti histamine is better taken orally rather than topicals". Okay. Everybody take note. I was prescribed oral anti histamine & topical steroid. I was also told not to continue wearing any creams/lotions, avoid tight cloth at that area, and to come see her after a week for follow up.

As the busy week of exam comes, I was not able to attend to my 2nd appointment. Hectic study life, with nobody to accompany me to the clinic (which is 10 min by taxi). Well here, all private clinics will only function during night time because doctors are obliged to serve the government hospital duty during the day, and continue working on their private clinics during the night. And the rule for Malaysians here is that; no Malaysian girls are to wander around by themselves during night except with supervision of at least a man. (we call them musyrif)

I went follow up just tonight, with 2 of my classmates which is a husband-and-wife, who are also going to review HER pregnancy with another obstetrician.

About the skin problem that i had, doctor declared good healing except for some hyperpigmentation which she says will resolve in a month or so without treatment. Good for me. She remind me not to use the fenistil again, which she thought might be the perpetuating factor for my 'contact dermatitis'. She said she cannot conclude what the trigger might be; maybe soap, lotion, cloth..

Okay. Enough about skin. Now moving to the obstetric part. This is the first time I went for an antenatal review with any couple. For those who know; THEY are my Abg Azmy & Kak DK. She is already pregnant for 22 weeks. This visit is for review of her baby's condition and if possible, to know the gender of their baby. Unluckily, baby is too shy to turn (I guess she/he is sleeping) to show his/her gender. 'Perhaps u might be embarrassed bcoz aunty is there, huh baby?' ehee.

Bro Azmy said " Beginila nanti kau dgn suamimu dtg jumpa doctor ".. aiyarks.. can't wait for that! :P

There they are, with our tutor who teaches us in our O&G round last semester. Although quarreling over a small thing is this couples' hobby, they actually care much about each other (well of course they are. hehe). As they always quote "this is what's gonna happen when u marry your own best friend" :)

Semoga baby sentiasa sihat dalam kandungan mama, dan mama pun sentiasa sihat menjaga baby dalam ur uterus~

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

DST... is the way a country tries to stretch their day. I mean day, with sunlight, with exclusion of night time. Every spring (which means the start of sweaty days), they will add an hour ahead of current time, and every fall, the one hour added will be subtracted back from the current time.(am talking about egypt)

Not all countries practice the same rules as Egypt. Some may subtract an hour, some may add 2 hours, or 20 minutes, or 40 minutes. (i guess this will be much more confusing to the citizen)
Countries like China, India, Japan, and countries without seasons don't apply this DST.

They who had TV in their houses will have no confusion/ difficulty to know the exact time when we are around the transitional time-changing days. Laptops were set for DST but it's not always in line with the real DST the country started. As a consequence, we students always got confused on when to attend classes, and worse when to attend exams! Is it using the old time, or the new time?

I actually was furious about this time-changing, menyusahkan org je!. But as they say, DST can decrease amount of RTA (road traffic accidents), prolonging the time for children to play during the day (like trick or treat during Halloween.. children aren't allowed to trick or treating during night time), decrease use of public electricity.. hurm maybe true. I don't know.

Spring time this year, Egypt had stopped using DST. So starting this year, there's no 5 hours difference for summer & 6 hours difference from winter (compared to Malaysia time).

They completely will abolish the use of DST starting now. better I think. :) But one thing I dislike is the fact that Subuh prayer is as early as 3 o'clock in the morning. We have to adjust our sleeping time in order to be able to get up early for the purpose. At least when the DST is still in use, Subuh prayer will only start at 4 am. Better than 3 am. Psychologically too early.

The thing about abolishing DST was; last year, Ramadhan started on August, but the DST will only end on September. (I only heard the rumors last year about them subtracting 1 hour because of Ramadhan, now only i confirmed by reading the news about it. I was in Malaysia, so what do i care if the time changes.hik3) They practically 'paused' the DST by subtracting one hour for the whole month of Ramadhan (to prevent them fasting one hour longer), and continue adding the 1 hour after the month end. Cool huh?

The other interesting thing is, while Egypt only have one common time for the whole country, Russia on the other hand have 11 different times inside them. (what language is this?)... Imagine you were traveling from Terengganu to Perlis with the need to change your watch timing according to the new place you arrived at. Pelik.. this was because Russia is too big of a country that the time zone changes. It's only recently that Russia reduced their 11 different time zone to only 9.

Malaysia was the case too before, but our government decided to equalize the time for the whole country despite of time zone changing. Syukur!

Terlebih semangat la pulak cerita pasal tukar jam. hee..

Two tips for a healthy Muslim Marriage

The first reminder has to do with becoming cognizant about our rights toward our spouses as obligated on us by Allah and His prophet (peace be upon him.) Everything is governed by the laws of Islam.

So, the first reminder is nothing more than to become ever conscious that the moment you entered your marriage, you became obligated to respect your spouse’s rights as defined under those divine laws. Claiming ignorance about those rights or your lack of resolve in upholding those rights therefore is not a valid excuse.

The problem in this regard is usually two fold. First, many couples simply aren’t even aware and knowledgeable about the rights that both husbands and wives have over each other. It’s not uncommon for many to rush into marriages with all the fanfare but neglecting to learn Islamic teachings regarding marriage and the rights that husbands and wives have over each other. It’s only when they hit roadblocks in their marriages that they start seeking those answers. Problems surface because each spouse assumes certain rights over the other and each spouse’s personal interpretation of what’s right or wrong complicates relationships even further.

The second problem is that while many of us may take the time to understand how their partner is not meeting their individual rights, they often neglect to learn their obligations toward the other spouse. Driven selfishly, each spouse gets preoccupied with how their partner isn’t contributing to the relationship rather than realizing how one is deficient in fulfilling their own obligations.

In the daily routine of give and take therefore, if your relationship is hitting hurdles, both of you ought to invest the time and effort to learn about those rights and obligations. Use this reminder to make a permanent mental note to help you become conscious of how knowingly or unknowingly you transgress and violate your spouse’s rights. Remember, you will be questioned about them.

Happy marriage is one in which couples find ways to tackle and resolve challenges without being disrespectful to the other. You can have your tough talks as long as you don’t cross the lines in disrespecting each other. Remember that Islam’s teachings never sanctioned to denigrate human dignity even in times of war then how can we in supposed bonds of love step out of that realm?

To conclude, wives can strive to become what the prophet referred to in this hadith:

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The entire world is full of resources, and among them the best resource is a RIGHTEOUS WIFE.” (Reported by: Abdullah ibn Amr (r) Source: Sahih Muslim, Vol. 2, #3465)

And for men, the prophet had this to say –

“The most complete believer is the best in character, and the best of you is the BEST TO HIS WOMENFOLK.” (Tirmidhi #1162 and verified)

Let’s learn our rights toward each other and let’s not be disrespectful to the other even when we are dealing with tough situations.

Dengan berakhirnya hari Rabu minggu ini, maka tamatlah pengajian Psikologi yang sangat menyeksakan. Sehari dalam dunia Psikologi terasa seperti seminggu!
Bagai mempelajari bahasa baru; bahasa ke-5 setelah Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris, Bahasa Jepun, Bahasa Arab, akhir sekali Bahasa Psikologi. Eh kenapa agak lain cara penulisan di post kali ini? Mungkin saya hendak membiasakan diri bermadah & bertatabahasa yang betul kerana pesakit-pesakit yang dijumpa 2 minggu ini sentiasa merosakkan bahasa, dan mencipta bahasa sendiri.

Apa bezanya Psikologi & Psikiatri?
Psikologi.. ialah cara NORMAL manusia berfikir dan bertindak, manakala Psikiatri ialah penyakit2 atau sindrom2 TIDAK NORMAL yang berlaku dalam diri.

Mengapa berlaku penyakit Psikiatri?
1. Faktor genetik; ahli keluarga yang mempunyai sakit seumpamanya akan memberi risiko anak2 untuk mendapat penyakit yang sama.
2. Faktor diri sendiri (coping ability); setiap seorang yang mengalami stres tidak akan memberikan tindakbalas yang sama. Penyakit lebih kerap timbul pada mereka yang kurang daya tahan.
3. Faktor persekitaran. Persekitaran yang agak mengongkong, mengkritik, berfikiran negatif.. Ataupun life events yang mencabar.

Maka berwaspada dan berdoalah agar kita dijauhkan daripada ancaman penyakit Psikiatri ini.

Berikut adalah antara cerita menarik yang saya suka untuk kongsi:

1. Lelaki, 20-an, belum berkahwin, tidak bekerja: datang ke hospital untuk membuang cip yang dipercayai ditanam di bawah giginya! Untuk mengetahui bagaimana cip ini tertanam di bawah giginya, kami pun memulakan sesi menemuramah: katanya, sebelum beliau balik ke tanah air (mesir), beliau berada di negara lain. Beliau telah menerima premonition/ vision/ future prediction bahawa Revolusi Mesir yang berlaku pada 25 Jan lalu akan berlaku. Beliau mengetahui apa yang akan terjadi kepada presiden serta menteri2. Oleh kerana vision ini, beliau telah ditangkap oleh pihak polis bagi menyoal siasat tentang masa depan negara mesir. Beliau percaya beliau telah di seksa, electrocuted, agar rahsia masa hadapan di bongkarkan. Cip telah ditanam dibawah giginya untuk mengesan keberadaan beliau. Beliau juga tidak boleh berada dekat dengan radio kerana wave dari radio akan mengesan apa yang beliau sedang fikirkan...

2. Lelaki, 30-an, belum bekahwin, graduan Engineering Faculty. Katanya beliau lain daripada orang lain. Gifted. Dan sebab itu ramai yang cuba melihat jejak langkahnya, dan cuba menculiknya. Beliau juga mendengar orang sekeliling bercakap buruk mengenainya. Calling him names. Katanya; dalam dunia ini, ada Fizik.. Tapi saya ada kuasa Metafizik. Ia adalah kuasa magik yang boleh mengawal minda seseorang, membaca apa yang seseorang sedang fikirkan. Katanya mindanya dikuasai metafizik. Besi aloi dan aluminium akan merendahkan kuasa kepandaiannya melalui radiasi. Ia akan masuk melalui mata. (Untuk itu, beliau melindungi matanya dengan cermin mata plastik yang bingkainya disaluti pita selofan all over). Jangan pakai baju warna merah. Ia akan menarik magik itu lebih dekat kepada kamu.

Woo.. seram jugak dengar. Dx: Skizofrenia

3. Lelaki, 30-an, berkahwin kali kedua. Katanya masalah kerana beliau ada 2 personaliti. Satu dalam sedar, yang satu lagi diluar sedar. Ketika berada dalam personaliti ke-2, beliau akan merasakan pemandangannya kabur dan sakit kepala akan datang, beliau akan memukul bapa, isteri, dan menghamburkan barang2 dalam rumah.(seperti yang bapanya ceritakan.beliau langsung tidak ingat apa yang dilakukan ketika berada dalam personaliti ke-2) Sesedar daripada personaliti ke-2, beliau akan terkejut dengan keadaan rumah yang bersepah dan luka2 pada badan sendiri. Doktor kata, ini mungkin sawan (epilepsy) tapi setelah EEG dibuat, nyata bukan. Ini sakit Psikologi. Triggernya mungkin kerana bapa yang terlalu mengawal anaknya. Baru bercerai dangan isteri pertama, 2 minggu kemudian diatur pula dengan isteri nombor 2.

Dx: Dissociative disorder

4. Wanita, unknown age, and other details (parents dont want to reveal). Datang dengan keadaan tak terurus, dan tidak mahu bergerak. Langsung. Perlu diangkat untuk dibawa kemana-mana. Bawah mata hitam, mungkin insomnia. Kadang2 tak mahu ikut kata langsung, kadang2 pula dia akan buat apa yang kita tak suruh. Kita kata duduk diam2, dia akan pergi balik jalan antara pintu dan kerusi. Tak berhenti. Pelik kan..

Dx: Catatonic schizophrenia

5. Pesakit2 wanita. Kehilangan insan yang tersayang. Berpakaian cantik2, bersolek suka2, berpuisi, bersajak. Over peramah. Tak berhenti bercerita. Sebelum ini, mereka berduka, bersedih, berjalan tanpa hala tuju, wang. Mencari permata yang hilang. Minda mereka menukarkan kejadian dan personaliti sediah tadi kepada personaliti yang over excited. Minda mereka menjadi protektif. Automatik telah memadamkan kisah duka tadi kepada kisah lain. Kasihan..

Dx: Bipolar disorder

Banyak lagi kes.. Bayangkan dalam sehari dapat jumpa 3-4 patient. Banyak cerita. Suka.Duka. Semoga saya dapat mengambil iktibar daripada apa yang berlaku, lapangkan dada, banyakkan berdoa. Semoga dijauhkan daripada gila.

Susah betul takde internet kat rumah ni. Pegi CC petang2 lepas habis kuliah, dah lewat sgt. Pukul 10-11 dah di mesia. Dulu kami tarik internet dr jiran, tapi skrg dia dah taknak buat bisnes dah. CC yang jauh tu pun dah taknak bagi org tarik dari dia. Boleh je nak pakai broadband, tapi ready lah 150LE per month..huhh tak berbaloi buang duit ke situ

Mak ada dapat mesej iffah kan pasal rumah yg kami jumpa tu? Susah baru dapat jumpa yg proper. Rumah lain yang iffah aim tak sempat tengok lagi, dah di kebas org.

Mesej reply mak iffah terima waktu tgh buat deal dengan tuan rumah. Memang agak mahal la.. Tapi takpa lah.Boleh lagi kot revise budget sebab masa depan tak perlu lagi naik teksi pegi kuliah. & xda lif mak..

Iffah dah konfem ambik rumah tu. Tuan rumah tu bekas Hakim. Anak dia sorg doktor, sorg lagi akauntan. At least bolehla cakap english dengan dorg. Banyak jugak duit dia minta sebagai cagaran nak masuk rumah ni, tapi we'll try our best la to impress them with our ability to take good care of our house as we did before. Dorg ada bad experience with the previous tenant, habis rumah tu hancur oleh dorg, smpai bath tub pun boleh pecah..melompat ke apa jugak waktu mandi? Harap2 dapat duit tu balik hujung tahun nanti.

We'll be moving in next month, lepas selesai kerja cat mengecat & pembersihan oleh tuan rumah. Gambar pun nantilah iffah ambik n upload.

Assalamualaikum!

I am back in Egypt already~ so long since i din update the blog, since the riot when internet & other types of connection has been cut off.. sampai sekarang sebab internet tak berpasang2 lagi drumah ni.

In this post, i'll be talking about usage of 'coolfever' for babies. Lama dah my 'tutor yg hensem' (sayang tak sempat bergambar dgn dia) told us about this, but i kept forgotten to write.

Hmm.. talking about fever, what actually happen in our body?

Biasanya, sebelum fever start, there's almost always infection in any site of the body. Normal body system will try to kill the bacteria/virus by increasing our core body temp.. to kill these bad armies!

Ok, for now, baby tengah ada fever. What should mom do?

Putting cool fever patch on the forehead is a good first step.. but.. sebenarnya the best thing to do is putting these patches on areas where capillaries are at their most superficial sites; as under the armpit, neck, and groins (celah paha). Cara ni akan lebih cepat meredakan demam.

The other thing is; orang selalu kata, bila demam selimutkan sampai berpeluh. Kalau dah berpeluh, lepas tu mesti cepat baik. Betul ke? Hmm... betul.. betul kenapa? Sebab peluh yang kita hasilkan tu kan akan tersejat balik ke udara. This evaporation is what's causing cooling of the body.. (ini yang doc sharifah cerita haritu kan, mommy ayep?) Tapi jangan overheat pulak.. bahaya for the brain.

Ada lagi satu, doc kata, lepas mandikan baby, let the skin to dry, takpayah lap pakai towel. Cara ni akan menyejukkan badan baby. Tapi jangan pulak cool..cool, sampai shivering. Shivering kan cara badan kita untuk menaikkan core temperature.

Okla.. only this i can share at this time..sebab tulis ni bukan through aunty's own lappy, pinjam org punya, dgn internet nya sekali. ngeh3

Harini cuti, plan nak stadi sehabis baik, tapi mata ni ngantuk memanjang. So, waktu2 mengantuk ni, update blog best jugak.

Post kali ni simple. Ceritakan balik je apa yg diceritakan oleh doctor dalam kelas haritu.
Haritu tajuk kelas ialah 'How to deliver bad news'.. Ini skills yg diajar untuk pelajar2 medic sekarang, yg not included dalam syllabus pelajar medic terdahulu. At least ada jugak latihan untuk menghadapi hari2 yg susah di masa akan datang. Skills ni jugak included dalam exam akhir tahun. Menjawab dan menyampaikan bad news kepada pelakon2 yg dah dilatih.

Ini cerita doctor:
Waktu tu, saya sedang bertugas di klinik. Seperti biasa, ibu dan bapa akan menemani anak mereka untuk berjumpa dengan doktor. Pesakit saya kali ni mengadu 'stoppage of mensruation'. Perempuan ni berumur dalam 15-16 tahun. Latar belakang pesakit diambil & saya akhirnya membawa pesakit ke bilik ultrasound, suspecting ketumbuhan di ovari dll.
Surprisingly, there's a 3 months old fetus inside her womb!

Kerana ini merupakan kali pertama saya berjumpa dengan kes sebegini, sy tidak tahu bagaimana untuk memberitahu berita yg agak mengejutkan ini. Tambahan lagi, kedua2 ibubapa pesakit ini datang bersama. Saya memberitahu diagnosis kepada rakan sekerja (lelaki) dan memintanya untuk mengambil alih tugas saya. Dia (rakan saya) membawa ibubapa tadi kedalam sebuah bilik tanpa anak mereka dan memberitahu diagnosis dari ultrasound tadi. Apalagi, parents ni pun mengamuklah!

Tak cukup dengan memberitahu ibubapa tanpa memberitahu anaknya terlebih dahulu, kawan sy memanggil pesakit tadi ke dalam bilik dan memarahinya! juga menjerit bertanyakan siapakah ayah baby tersebut!

Habis cerita. Mengikut patient rights, sebenarnya confidentiality patut dijaga, walaupun patient berumur 18 tahun ke bawah. Sepatutnya, doktor tadi memberitahu pesakit tadi je, dr patient la mau bagitau parents dia macam mana.

Bukan ni saja ekstrak dr cerita ni. Terkejut jugak bila dengar cerita mengandung luar nikah di Egypt ni. Egypt kot.. tapi ye lah, nampaknya dimana je kita berada, syaitan tu tetap ada membisik kejahatan dalam telinga manusia. Its the matter of how we handle things carefully.

Satu lagi, doktor kami kata, budak perempuan tu tak cantik langsung! dia pun pelik kenapa budak perempuan yg tak cantik langsung ni, dan sangat down-to-earth, dan sangat naif ni boleh terjebak dalam kes macam ni. Mungkin sebab kenaifan dialah lelaki senang sangat nak pujuk rayu. Kesian.

Oh ya, budak perempuan ni dah buat urine pregnancy test di rumah, tapi negatif. Tu lah dia boleh dengan yakinnya datang klinik dengan parents dia. (Urine pregnancy test ni detect hormon hCG dalam air kencing. hCG akan hilang selepas 10 minggu usia kandungan. Tulah budak ni dapat result negatif)

Beberapa tahun dulu di mesir ni, waktu I was being nice to orang2 yg i meet di tepi jalan; ada sorang pakcik ni. Dia tanya i org mana, dtg sini kenapa. Just to be nice, i answered with smile. Cerita punya cerita, smpai depan apartment dia, boleh2 lelaki ni ajak naik rumah dia. Of course i said no kan.. Then dia patah balik kejar me with my friend yg waktu tu otw nak balik rumah. Siap tarik2 lengan org lagi nak suruh naik pegi rumah dia. N siap kuarkan duit dari poket aa nak tunjuk yg dia ada banyak duit. Tak guna punya pakcik! Nasib baikla waktu tu tgh ramai org. Kami pun buat muka marah n jalan cepat2. Nasib baik dia berhenti kejar. Alhamdulillah Allah nak jauhkan dari bnda2 yang tak baik.

The moral of the story: xpayah la berbaik2 dengan org yg kita tak kenal. Who knows what he had in mind.

2 things we figured wrong about babies

I watched a Korean movie showing life with a baby. In one scene, they give a tip on how to know whether the baby is hungry or not. They say, put your fingers beside baby's mouth; if they follow your finger, that means they're hungry, and u should feed him milk.

The truth is; this is what we call 'Rooting reflex', a primitive reflex a baby had. It doesn't even means that the baby is hungry or anything! This reflex will make the baby to open his mouth and follow the finger. Another example for a reflex is 'Grasp reflex' --where babies will grasp tightly anything given in their palm of hand.

There is another situation I experience while taking care of my Arif (my irresistible nephew). I asked akak; how to know if he wants to drink? Akak said: Put ur finger inside his mouth. If he sucks, that means he wants the milk. But this is not the thing too. There's sucking reflex as well ~

Ahh.. well.. I hadn't realize this till now. There's a line in the link above said "A hungry infant will turn the head to the right or left when the cheek is brushed.." HUNGRY. okay. I didn't learn that in class. But the thing is, it is still apparent after feeding. So not necessarily means baby is hungry? Maybe they are sleepy after feeding or interest is focused on something else?

In correlation with this bad winter we are facing here now in Egypt, I'd like to share some bad situations that i went through these couple of days.

All through my years studying here, cold weather is always preceded by warnings like rain, gradual decrease in temperature, policeman changing their suit into a thick, different colored one, and those sort of things. This year, rain started like a month ago but still the weather is hot i am sweating walking in the road. Raining 2-3 times in a month but still..winter hasn't come. Last week, suddenly it rained again and it was hell cold. Winds suddenly blow hard the whole day that 4 factories collapsed at Alex as we all heard. I don't usually use heater to warm my room but this time of the year, the pain the cold brings is unbearable. Heater is suddenly compulsory!

The cold itself is killing me, let alone the electricity problems we are facing. Everyday since the day of sudden fall of temperature, starting 4pm - 7/8 pm, electric current went down. I don't mean black-outs; it's just that most of the lights in the house went off. I depend on small yellow bulb i had hanging in my room by chance to study. I depend on candles to cook and going to toilet. Our living and dinings are just lit by 3 small-disco-like bulbs embedded in the ceiling also by chance. (this means too heater in bathroom is not functioning, also in the rooms..even blenders, irons aren't functioning). So its dark and its cold. yeah. And yesterday, it became worse; the thing started as early as 10 am!. Needless to say today, Friday; which is a weekend holiday for all, electricity is off since 6 to around 11 am i guess. What the..! How's tonight, how's tomorrow..? I can't even think of..

Egyptian men. Cold weather. what's their link? parasympathetic stimulation? arousal?
Taxi drivers, bus attendant, bus passenger.. name it. I had had the experience. All this while i just been hearing things and rumors of sexual harassment done to Malaysian students by the Arabs. Now i know what to feel about it & how they did it. Beware! Egyptians are never to be trusted.

# Sitting in the front seat of a taxi/ bus, and while changing the gear, the distal 2 of their fingers rub on your thigh.
# Sitting in a bus and suddenly a hand appears on the side of the seat and try rubbing your torso. Or sense of fingers rubbing you buttocks coming from in between the seats.
# Walking pass a man and suddenly a hand slapped your feminine body.

What? we wear baju kurung most of the time and still no respect is given. Imagine those wearing tight clothes exposing here and there.. I don't know what kinda trouble it dragged them into.

Walking animals they are!
Memorize these sentences and be ready to shout at them whenever needed:

Following is a story i found at Ust. Syauqi's blog. A nice one. The one related to the title of the post: Read and ponder!

Seorang anak mengeluh pada ayahnya mengenai kehidupannya dan bertanya mengapa hidup ini terasa begitu sukar dan menyakitkan baginya. Dia tidak tahu bagaimana untuk menghadapinya dan hampir menyerah kalah dalam kehidupan. Setiap kali satu masalah selesai, timbul pula masalah baru.

Ayahnya yang bekerja sebagai tukang masak membawa anaknya itu ke dapur. Dia mengisi tiga buah periuk dengan air dan menjerangkannya di atas api. Setelah air di dalam ketiga periuk tersebut mendidih, dia memasukkan lobak merah di dalam periuk pertama, telur dalam periuk kedua dan serbuk kopi dalam periuk terakhir.

Dia membiarkannya mendidih tanpa berkata-kata. Si anak tertanya-tanya dan menunggu dengan tidak sabar sambil memikirkan apa yang sedang dilakukan oleh ayahnya.

Setelah 20 minit, si ayah mematikan api. Dia menyisihkan lobak dan menaruhnya dalam mangkuk, mengangkat telur dan meletakkannya dalam mangkuk yang lain dan menuangkan kopi di mangkuk lain.

Lalu dia bertanya kepada anaknya, "Apa yang kau lihat, nak?" "Lobak, telur dan kopi", jawab si anak.

Ayahnya meminta anaknya merasa lobak itu. Dia melakukannya dan berasa bahawa lobak itu sedap dimakan. Ayahnya meminta mengambil telur itu dan memecahkannya. Setelah membuang kulitnya, dia dapati sebiji telur rebus yang isinya sudah keras.

Terakhir, ayahnya meminta untuk merasa kopi. Dia tersenyum ketika meminum kopi dengan aromanya yang wangi.

Setelah itu, si anak bertanya, "Apa erti semua ini, ayah?" Ayah menerangkan bahawa ketiga-tiga bahan itu telah menghadapi kesulitan yang sama, direbus dalam air dengan api yang panas tetapi masing-masing menunjukkan reaksi yang berbeza.

Lobak sebelum direbus kuat, keras dan sukar dipatahkan. Tetapi setelah direbus, lobak menjadi lembut dan mudah dimakan. Telur pula sebelumnya mudah pecah dengan isinya yang berupa cairan. Tetapi setelah direbus, isinya menjadi keras. Serbuk kopi pula mengalami perubahan yang unik. Setelah berada di dalam rebusan air, serbuk kopi mengubah warna dan rasa air tersebut.

"Kamu termasuk golongan yang mana? Air panas yang mendidih itu umpama kesukaran dan dugaan yang bakal kamu lalui. Ketika kesukaran dan kesulitan itu mendatangimu, bagaimana harus kau menghadapinya ? Apakah kamu seperti lobak, telur atau kopi ?" tanya ayahnya.

Bagaimana dengan anda ? Apakah anda adalah lobak yang kelihatan keras, tapi dengan adanya penderitaan dan kesulitan, anda menyerah menjadi lembut dan kehilangan kekuatanmu.

Atau, apakah kamu adalah telur yang pada awalnya memiliki hati lembut, dengan jiwa yang dinamis ? Namun setelah adanya kematian, patah hati, penceraian atau apa saja cabaran dalam kehidupan akhirnya anda menjadi anda menjadi keras dan kaku. Dari luar kelihatan sama, tetapi apakah kamu menjadi pahit dan keras dengan jiwa dan hati yang kaku ?

Siapa kata bakal doktor tak pandai buat kuih?

Harini hari cuti sempena Maal Hijrah.. esok dah kelas pulak. So, memandangkan saya dan ahli Beyt Hurul 'Ain, Ayu (nama sebenar dirahsiakan :P) dah lama xbuat kuih sama2, dan adik kepada Ayu jugak mencabarnya untuk menyiapkan kuih2 yang comel ini, maka seawal jam 8pagi, kami memulakan tugas suri2 rumahtangga iaitu 'cabaran menyiapkan sarapan untuk suami anda'. haha

Kuih pertama yang menjadi pilihan hati ialah kuih Keria, atau kuih Gelang.. mengikut negeri dan daerah masing2. Resepi kuih ini di sumbangkan oleh Ayu. Saya hanya menjadi assistant sahaja :))
Ini cara2 membuat kuih keria (khas buat adik kepada Ayu :p)

Langkah pertama: Rebus ubi manis dan tinggalkan kering.

Langkah kedua: Lenyekkan ubi dan letakkan tepung disebelah ubi (back to back appearance :))

Langkah ketiga: Ambil ubi dan tepung dan bentukkan bulat mengikut kebesaran yang dikehendaki.

Langkah keempat: Buat lubang di tengah2 bulatan tadi dengan menggunakan jari kelingking untuk hasil yang lebih comel. hehe

Goreng2 sehingga warna bertukar bronze..

Lepas goreng, roll kuih tadi kedalam gula yang telah di blend, dan hidang!

(seperti yang telah diberitahu, resepi ini milik Ayu, maka versi ini mungkin berbeza dengan versi asal yang menggunakan gula cair)

Setelah habis projek pertama dengan hasil yang agak memuaskan, (hehe) kami beralih pula kepada projek kedua iaitu 'cabaran menyiapkan minum petang untuk suami anda'..
Untuk projek kedua, kuih karipap menjadi pilihan!

Mari kita belajar cara buat karipap versi kami..
Ayu menjadi assistant kepada saya dalam menyiapkan cabaran kedua. hehe

Langkah 1: Sediakan tepung, letakkan minyak kedalamnya, dan perhalusi sehingga menjadi kasar (friable).

Langkah 2: Masukkan air garam kedalam adunan tepung tadi dan adun sekuat hati sehingga boleh dibentuk

Langkah 3: Potong2 kan adunan tadi sehingga menjadi bulat2 kecil supaya senang dibentuk nanti

Langkah 4: Tumiskan bawang, udang kering dan serbuk kari dan campurkan dengan ubi yg telah dipotong dadu.

Langkah 5: Masukkan air dan yg seangkatan dengannya dan keringkan.

Bentukkan dan kelimkan dengan kesenian tangan masing2 dan goreng!

Siap dihidang!

An effort this special just got to be shared! So we did.. hehe I wonder apalah komen mereka2 yang telah merasa kuih kami yang kurang serba serbi ni.

Harini 5 Dec.. hari yang ditunggu2 dan yg telah memeningkan kepala2 student2 sem 8 sejak kebelakangan ni. Midsem exam untuk round Obstetric & Gyne yang kami ambik sejak 2 bulan setengah yang lalu. About the exam~~ hurmmm not that easy I can say. 44 soalan EMQ (extended matching question) & 16 soalan MCQ. Tekejut jugak bila bukak kertas tu sbb soalan pertama pun dah tak sure. Tapi insyaAllah, kita dah usaha sehabis baik. Moga2 semua dapat result yg baik2 belaka.

Ini sticker besar pelbagai kaler yg banyak membantu dalam acara pen'study'an i..kih3

So, sepanjang 2 bulan setengah belajar pasal sakit puan & mengandung ni, apa conclusion yg i dapat? Let me list some.. weird / interesting /unbelievable facts:

#1: Menopause itu bermaksud berhentinya darah period selama paling kurang 12 bulan. Kalau dah xda darah selama 12 bulan, pastu tiba2 berdarah balik, sila lah berjumpa dgn doktor secepat mungkin. bahaya!

#2: Keputihan itu ada yg normal & ada yg x normal. Normal apabila warnanya putih, tidak berbau dan tidak gatal. Ianya banyak apabila tiba waktu subur. Its totally NORMAL bila sentiasa terasa underwear basah.

#3: Tempoh berpantang dalam istilah medik ialah sepanjang 6minggu, dimana organ2 yg berubah ketika mengandung kembali ke bentuk asal.

#4: Wanita2 yang menghidap penyakit kencing manis perlu strictly control penyakit ini selama 2-3 bulan sebelum mengandung untuk mengelakkan kecacatan kepada bayi.

#5: Soya mengandungi hormon estrogen & sesuai diambil untuk mengelakkan osteoporosis dikalangan wanita yang telah menopause.

#6: Pemakaian seluar dalam yg lembab atau terlalu ketat boleh mengakibatkan jangkitan kuman.

#7: Sakit ketika period akan hilang setelah melahirkan anak atau keguguran kandungan.

#8: 50-60% wanita yang mengalami PMS (premenstrual symptom) mempunyai masalah psykologi!

#9: Muntah yg tidak normal ketika mengandung ialah apabila ia berlaku selepas 3 bulan umur kehamilan & menyebabkan perut ibu kosong tanpa makanan.

#10: Once you pernah buat c-sect, other delivery should be conduct in the hospital. Once dah 2 kali buat c-sect, always c-sect afterward.

#11: Wanita memerlukan lemak yg cukup dalam badan bagi menukarkannya kepada hormon estrogen untuk keseimbangan. (kurus sgt xbagus..)

#12: Jus lemon dan cuka boleh digunakan untuk membunuh sperma (bagi tujuan merancang kehamilan)

okaii.. rasanya banyak benda yg interesting waktu belajar dulu, tapi xingat la pulak.. patutnya bila dapat tau, terus share baru tak lupa. :))

Today is the first day of Hari Raya Haji holiday. Cuti Raya di Egypt ni seminggu, unlike Malaysia yg dapat cuti sehari je. yeke? For the time being, i'll be staying home, sehari sebelum raya baru balik kampung (a.k.a Rumah Sabah, Cairo). I'm just not in the mood yet to bukak buku now (after doing the weekly laundry), so here i am jotting down some words.

Yesterday was my 4th time going to the labor ward (ward bersalin).. Every other day, i wasnt lucky that no one is having their baby at the time i was there. Yesterday was an experience. My first time actually, seeing in- labor- mother going through her 1st stage of labor.
Readers.. labor has 3 stages:

1) CERVICAL DILATATION AND EFFACEMENT
where the cervix dilates to give enough space for the baby to be born. It takes 12-20 hours.. which depends on how fast the cervix can dilate. it is here in this stage that mothers will experience pain.

2) FETAL EXPULSION
now, after the birth canal is already set for the baby, they will be born! takes half an hour to 2 hours. what i'm so geram about is seeing this tiny cute baby being born with their eyes close, with perfect calmness and comfort while their mothers struggle to push them out! (tapi xpa, because soon after, they'll have their first cry and started to breath on their own) Doktor2 risau kalau baby xnangis, sebab tangisan pertama ni lah yang membantu paru-paru baby mengembang untuk membolehkan baby bernafas sendiri..

3) PLACENTAL DELIVERY
soon after the baby is born, placental will be delivered (placenta as in tembuni? if i'm not mistaken)

Coming back to the mother in the labor ward. She shouted her throat off, i'm telling u. ( lebih teruk jeritannya berbanding the one i experienced in bone marrow aspiration)

Really loud that the whole ward in tense of it. I guess this is why people say suara boleh pecah lepas melahirkan.. I asked the doctor about patient's history, and doc said she has been there since last night, thats why she looks so exhausted. (so is the doctor.. tgk kami mcm nak makan org. nasib baik kami xdijerit sekali) and its her first baby..which makes it a more difficult and painful.

We waited an hour and a half i guess, before baby is ready to be delivered. The ward is next to the labor room, so the mother had to walk herself to the next room. Begaduh2 pakai surgery robe, tup tup baby dah lahir! so easy.. doctors have to make episiotomy to the mom.(cutting of the canal to make more space). one of my friend tried to take pictures and record the event but was scolded by the doctor. so no pics then.

Its a baby boy. and he's adorable. His head was a bit oblong, as to fit in the narrow birth canal. (it'll be in normal shape again after weeks). He cried after being slapped by the midwife who handle him. a really soft cry.

After seeing placental delivery, we rush for our next class~

Enough about babies. There's another interesting something i wanna share.
We learned about technologies emerging to help couples have babies.. There's IVF (in vitro fertilization as we know it/ or so called test tube baby), and others. Learning of the topic, our doctor raised an issue about China with its one child policy.

It has started in the 70's to control population growth in the country and the effects on their economic status. Stating from the web: the economic causes are; to reduce the demand of natural resource, maintain a steady labor rate, reducing unemployment caused from surplus labor, and reduce rate of exploitation.. Guess Chinese is all about business and money huh?

'for a prosperous, powerful nation, and a happy family, please use birth planning'

Thinking about the effects of such law despite to increase the wealthiness of the country; there's increasing abortion rate (possibly because they prefer boys than girls), abandoned unwanted childre, social problems of a precious child (they used to call this very precious one child as the 'little emperor', who was excessively treated, with no ability to live independently), unequality of both sexes, unequal enforcement (rich people can have second child by paying fines-- very unfair!), over-dependent of old people to retirement funds and charity (well.. 4 grandparents with 2 parents and a child.. that's kinda imbalance).. There's also increasing usage of technology for the rich, as the law stated: no penalties for multiple pregnancy in the first birth.

What are they thinking? Aren't there anybody who'll be speaking for themselves about the stupid regulation? Or do they obey because they're born to be dictated by tyranny?

after weeks of semester 8

This semester is all about disease of women, pregnancy, and babies!
When I learn about women.. which means learning about myself, sometimes there's self-pity.

Women faces many2 problems since the day they were born. till puberty.. till childbearing age, till menopause.. even after menopause, disease are coming after us more than they come after the guys- proved by taking gynecology in our MD other than studying andrology. Too many, and too complicated, yet too interesting to deal with; as our doctor said. I guess that's why there's more male gynecologist compared to female, maybe they can't bear it to see one of their kind getting looked at, being the trial of drugs and procedures, living their lives at stake with complications of the disease she's having.

Starting on the first day a girl is born, they may bleed per vagina (which is perfectly normal) because of maternal hormone withdrawal. Going to adolescent age.. our genital system is easily infected--for many reason i'm not gonna write. Going to childbearing age.. facing the risk of ectopic pregnancy (mengandung luar rahim)--which mostly managed by surgery, pregnancy and its effects on every inch of our body (i do mean every single inch). Menopause: again, changes a person has to confront; sometimes all her life afterward. inability to sleep? feeling hot and sweat all the time? bone ache? heart problem? u name it.

I remember when one of my doctor told us about his experience working in the UK. He said women there are so strong and violent and rude that they can't be easily talked to, examined.. or anything. They were protected by Women Rights in every aspects of life-- and that he hates it! he prefers it in Egypt because here women don't have voices.--and this is a man talking, who has a WIFE who made his house a home, prepared his clothes, food, children so he can be happily living life. He even say his mat salleh girlfriend is wayyyyy more prettier than his wife. (what ever happen to true love?) Hurmm i don't know why i'm bringing this up. maybe there's a burning fire hiding inside myself , which tries peeking out.

Being a women gives us easy pass to heaven.. and that's ALHAMDULILLAH.

See..? At least 4 basic act, (which is already compulsory from the start) can lead us to Jannah. This is the unbiased justice we can find in Islam and nowhere else. So women out there.. no matter how hard it was and what is going to be, remember Allah's promise, for Allah never break His promises. Protect our dignity, be courteous, be faithful; as
"Sesungguhnya sopan santun dan keimanan adalah saling berkaitan, jika salah satunya dikeluarkan, yang satu lagi juga akan hilang serentak." (Hadis Riwayat Baihaqi)

Alhamdulillah after 5 days of fridge-less, at last it functions again.
Lucky me who kept the warranty of 2 years properly. Warranty in Arabic is dhaman. Instead of paying approx. L.E 700 for replacing the coils and compressor, I just paid L.E 20 for the upah. (ni pun sebenarnya nak ditiadakan tapi ustaz yg jd jurucakap pun xdapat nak gaduh).

They said at first the gas- conducting coils broke. But after replacement, it still hasn't function. Rupa-rupanya there's a problem with the compressor too. Definitely a thing the manufacturer should be blamed about. Our 'icebox' is still so young at age..

The repairer accused us of 'overusing' this icebox.. apekehal? He said we didn't switch it off while we went for holiday.. which we did. And klu pasang pun apa salahnya.. org yang tak balik bercuti takkan la dengan tak pasal2 nak matikan jugak peti sejuk tu? Arab2.. they tried to find fault in everything; as if they're always right.. This is what i HATE the most about Egypt--The arrogance of their people. (but some are of course excluded)

Tapi takpalah. At least dah settled. This repair cost me L.E 20 + my absence to class this morning..

bukak puasa waktu 1st year di luar (if i'm not mistaken la)

These 2 sayings are the most common words to be heard during the Holy month of Ramadhan in Egypt. I had spent the whole month fasting during my first year there. Despite of its extremely hot weather, the 'sungkai' -as what the sabahan call it (fast-breaking) is earlier than in Malaysia.

Good thing about Egypt is that; everyday, everywhere-- when Maghrib came, people carrying trays of drinking water and dates will be seen. So even if u're stuck in a traffic, u don't have to worry thinking about what to break your fast with. (my brother once joked-- "kalau takda makanan mau bukak puasa, korekla hidung; kasi batal puasa~" :D kwang 3 !)

Rich businessmen in Egypt like to spend their money for iftar. Malaysian students (especially guys) like to attend this event as their food are tasty and plenty!

Now, talking about good behaviors we can commit in this holy month-- which is DONATING. (Tak perlu tunggu bulan puasa baru nak buat baik)-true. But since its Ramadhan, lets double or triple or quadruple our good deeds to gain Allah's Blessings. AVOID AVOID AVOID bad behaviors, because like the title of this post says--our body will speak on behalf of our mouth when that day come. So beware!

And for that, PLEASE.. PLEASE.. PLEASE..

UROLITHIASIS @ Renal Stone @ Batu Karang

Lets read some facts regarding renal stone --a post as requested by a friend of mine.

Our kidney has thousands of important function; which one of those are the excretion of urine. We have tracts which transport these urine from kidney to outside our body. Once the tract is interrupted and blocked by crystal precipitate a.k.a stone, symptoms of urolthiasis will develop. Lets first see basics of our urinary tract:

It starts from the 2 kidneys, followed by 2 ureters into the bladder, and lastly to urethra, connecting to outside our body. (as the photo show)

Urolithiasis is the most common disease occurring in our urinary tract. It occurs more in males in their 20-30's. It seldomly occur in female, because we have more crystal inhibitors; preventing stone formation in our body compared to men. Furthermore, men's testosterone predispose more to stone formation. Thank you Allah! hehe

Things like these can predispose to renal stone:
-low water intake
-low urine output volume
-high protein intake, high sodium intake (salt), low calcium intake (milk)
-recurrent urinary tract infection
-other causes needless to discuss (related to other diseases understandable to meds students only :P)
-to those having gout; be more cautious as the disease itself can lead to this urolithiasis

Patients could have symptoms like pain in urinating, red urine, loin pain, or absolute absence of urine.

In treating the disease, we aim to reduce the growth of existed stones and prevent its recurrence. Of course, first of all, prevention is better than cure. Drink lots of water of at least 2 liters per day, distributed equally throughout the day, drink more milk, reduce salt intake, take moderate amount of protein, reduce food high in oxalate for example; spinach, star fruits, black pepper, berries, mangoes, black tea, cocoa, strawberry, cabbage.. also--avoid Vitamin D supplement!

Once you already develop stone, steps of management will be done beginning with;
1. medical treatment
2. non invasive extra-corporeal shockwave therapy (ESWL)
3. endoscopic treatment and
4. surgical intervention.

It is important to know that 30% patients develop stones and it pass spontaneously without any symptoms, but the remaining will be seeking medical attention.

Medical treatment includes giving patients drugs according to the nature of the stone ( the stone can be acidic, alkaline ).

Patients will be subjected to ESWL if medical treatment fails. This therapy uses shock wave from outside the body exactly at the site where the stone resides. It will break the stone into small pieces to let it pass naturally through urine. This therapy is useless if stone diameter exceeds 2 cm.

Moving to the next step, we might interfere using endoscope if drugs and ESWL is to no avail.

It will enter through u-know-where down there.. I've seen doctors doing this procedure couple of times before. Though they put some lubricants before introducing; it still looks pretty painful. Looking at the stone from inside, doctors may take the stone as it is, or produce mechanical compression to break it, or emit laser wave to disintegrate it.--as long as it relieves the blockage.

The last intervention is to do open surgery to remove the blockage. (we will not proceed to surgery unless all other management steps fails as opens surgery carry higher risk of complications)

So, readers, take note of those foods leading to stones-- eat more citrate fruits (oranges, lime, pineapples), and drink karkadeh as recommended by my doctor. (karkadeh is hibiscus drink- ever drink them? it taste like ribena)

My housemate and I left for Cairo yesterday. So we're currently in Cairo, staying at Sabah State Shelter (<--that sounds like a shelter for the homeless).

Its actually a flat house flooded by Sabahan students studying at Cairo..
But this arent the point i'm writing today though.
The point is; it hasn't reach 24hrs staying here yet, that my nose already bleeds -causing me to wake up from my deep sleep.

It's extremely hot here in Cairo, compared to our hometown Mansoura. 38 degrees i bet. Guess my nasal arteries can't adapt to the temperature change that it throws it's tantrum :).. cute arteries~
So now lets see some facts about nosebleed or the medical term-- 'epistaxis':

- it can be self-limited or a medical emergency - it is usually a nuisance, but can be life threatening especially in elderly.

- it can be caused by simple irritation, or trauma, or tumors, or prolonged respiratory infection or allergy, or idiopathic (unknown)-- (like Dr House says-- idiopathic is an italic word of idiocy as we can't determine its cause. {I'm Dr Gregory House number 1 fan ^_^ })

- when one experience epistaxis, don't panic. Just rush to the sink, pinch or clip your nose until the bleeding stops--putting pressure on a traumatized artery controls bleeding. This manouver is also true for any bleeding site allover the body (remember! when facing emergency situations of bleeding, raise the bleeding part of trunk/limb, and put pressure on it. This can help saving one's life from dying running out of blood. Ice packs also can be used as cold made the arteries constrict; thus decrease the bleeding. When the amount is huge, go to your doctors so they can evaluate the cause of bleeding. * I don't know what else to write.

Hurm.. have u watched My Sister's Keeper? The movie shows a storyline of a leukemic patient living her life. Great movie. It made me remember the manifestations of leukemia easier for the exams. It involves blood a lot. Go watch and relate it with epistaxis then~

I'm looking forward to fly for summer holiday in Malaysia soon. Its unconditionally, irrevocably BORING staying here after the exams. Only God knows how. hehe

Now I realize how small it was and I shouldn't had burden my mind and soul thinking about them in that much depth.-- and that was after reading few pages of this book I stole from Abah's bookshelf at home. :P.. UNLIMITED POWER. (Anthony Robbins). So when things started to go upside down; clench your fists and shout to yourself: I will not fall!

1. You must learn how to handle frustration.

Frustration can kill dreams; which happen all the time. It can change a positive attitude to a negative one, an empowering state into a crippling one. The worst thing a negative attitude does is wipe out self-discipline; and when it's gone, the results we desire will be gone. Its probably not easy to handle such frustration especially when that's the only thing which keep you going. But it'll get easier. The pain of it will not fade; but it'll get easier with time. There's always great frustrations on the road to any great success.

Here's a 2 step formula for handling stress:
i. Don't sweat the small stuff.
ii. Remember; its all small stuff.

2. You must learn how to handle rejection.

We don't create limits to ourselves just by fear in a little two-lettered word 'no'. (this is applicable in any matter in life-- business, studies, relationships). The word itself has no power. It can't cut your skin or sap your strength. The power comes with how we represents it to ourselves; from the limits it made you create-- and limited thought create limited lives. Remember, success is buried on the other side of rejection.

3. You must learn to handle financial pressure.

O yeah.. This has always been a problem. The only way not to have financial pressures is not to have any finance...!!.. Money is like everything else. You can make it work for you, or you can let it work against you. Deal with it as with anything else in mind; with the same purpose and elegance. Learn to make it , to save and to give. The book urges those who make money to give 10% of each paycheck away-- to someone who needs them more. It teaches us the value of giving and make us believe that we earn more than enough. More than enough means no pressure by end of the month.

4. You must learn to handle complacency.

A person who is too comfortable stops growing, and stops creating added value. LAO-TSU once said "That which is achieved the most, still has the whole of its future yet to be achieved". You're either climbing or you're sliding. That's the only choice.

There's one kind of complacency which comes from comparison. We might, once in our lives think that we were doing well because we were well compared to the people we knew. That's one big mistake! It may just means that our friends aren't doing well, and the fact that we haven't give enough of ourselves to it. There are millions of people who did better then, so whats with the satisfaction? We have to learn to judge ourselves by our goals instead of by what our peers seem to be doing.

5. Always give more than you expect to receive.

The secret of living is giving. You've got to be willing to plant the seed and then nurture its growth. Water it, fertilize it and take real good care of it. Then, if you do it well, you will get your plant and fruits sometime later. There's no such thing in life as waiting-to-be-given-something of. When you start to wait, it has already gone before you know it.
Of course, we can make big achievements by ourselves; but we don't really have power, we don't have real wealth. If we make it to the top of 'success mountain' all by ourselves, we'll probably end up jumping off! So give, and share, and love even if the possibility to receive good deed is so tiny. Like people always say; do good anyway~

Muslims are only human. Many of them may wish to celebrate the rituals of “true love” and other illusions and delusions imported from the western world.

Let us remember that when we face our respective Days of Judgment, we will be examined according to how we fulfilled our duties in life, NOT according to how many times we “fell in love”.

The duties upon which we will be examined, after our religious rites and rituals, may indeed require loving relationships and atmospheres to establish. However, this “thing called love” can only be inferred from how we treat our families, relatives, neighbors, and fellow human beings.

“Love” in the absence of the hard evidence of good behavior and performance of duties cannot be said to be relevant to our Judgment Day.

There was a saint in Catholic history, named Valentine. Evidently, his heart was pierced as he died upon a cross of some sort, so that he is referred to in connection with all the customs attending to the western Christian habits of romantic love.

It seems he loved his people very much and endured a cruel death as punishment for defending their rights to love one another.

Some western government officials once came to Malaysia, to promote education in the USA. When the Muslim students in their audience asked about hostel facilities, they were told that in many American campuses, students could choose between same-sex hostels and co-ed hostels.

Some students mentioned that co-ed hostels would be forbidden to Muslims, whereupon the American officials said something like, “We are sure that your parents have brought you up with good, strong values, so that the co-ed hostel would not cause you to misbehave.” -->WTH?

As the Muslims in the audience sat there somewhat stunned, one of the older Muslim males stood up and said he was sorry, but the Qur’an does not lead us to believe that single men and women of any sexually-active age could possibly trust themselves to avoid the major sin of “zina” in such circumstances as co-ed hostels.

Moreover, he said, the fathers of the young students present WOULD NOT APPRECIATE these westerners offering such facilities to their children. He himself stated flatly that his own daughters would not be allowed within thousands of miles of such institutions, or of people whose understanding of human nature was so totally contrary to what we are taught in our Qur’an and Sunnah.

This man was more or less cheered by the good Muslim youth in attendance at this conference, possibly because they were too polite to speak in this way themselves. The westerners had nothing but silence in response to the older Muslim’s stated position, and that was more or less the end of that conference session.

Muslim youth must understand that the end of the Valentine’s Day customs is exactly what the Americans offered with their so-called “liberal” housing facilities for college students.

Moreover, there is no point taking even one step along a road that you do not intend to travel. There is no point in public school students exchanging “Valentine’s Cards”, with such messages as “You are my Valentine!”, and pictures of red hearts pierced by an arrow (drawn from the original Saint Valentine experience).

Pairing off for marriage is the key to the second 50% of being Muslim, as the Prophet said in one of his accepted Hadith. For this, we need the most wisdom we can possibly gather, whether from our parents, our learned scholars, our older relatives, or whomever else. Do we need the “wisdom” of Catholic statues for this decision?

We learn that sociological statistics do NOT indicate any greater stability or success-rate for romance-based marriages. Marriages arranged by families, or the ones well safeguarded within the Shariah boundaries, however unwelcome they may temporarily seem to their children, or however “out of fashion”, are seen by the sociologists’ statistics to be equally successful as romantic pairing.

The West is so confused on the meaning of “love” that they use the same word in their language for the feeling you have for your spouse, the feeling you have for your parents, the feeling you have for your friend, your house, your hobby, your favorite food, your pet bird, or even eating at McDonald’s.

We have another word for the feelings we have for our parents or children in the Islamic culture – “mahabbah”. It is perhaps relevant for us to refer to one of Syaikh Dr. Muhammad Afifi Al-Akiti’s writings in explaining the concept of ‘mahabbah’ as the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) taught us.

The Hadith lA yu’minu aHadukumHattA yuHibba liakhIhi mA yuHibbu li-nafsihi

[literally: None of you believes until he wants for his brother what he would want for himself].

Syaikh Afifi : the most judicious explanation of this hadith, by the collector, Imam Nawawi himself (and the same sharh was again related, but later ascribed by some to another Shafi’i jurist, the meticulous Ibn al-’Imad to the effect: It is better for that (the saying of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) to be interpreted in the sense of universal brotherhood, so that it includes the non-Muslim and the Muslim. Thus he wants for his non-Muslim brother what he would want for himself that is [read: min li-l-bayan] his converting to Islam; just as he wants for his Muslim brother, his remaining in Islam. That is why it is recommended to supplicate for Divine guidance [Hidaya] on behalf of the non-Muslim. [Nawawi, Sharh Arba'in, 123] [See: The Meaning of Universal Brotherhood http://www.livingislam.org/maa/mubn_e.html].

Why, then, observe this Valentine’s Day that celebrates a concept about which the westerners themselves are totally confused, even in their own languages?

The Valentine’s Day concept embraces the model of a Catholic Saint, and its statues, for its observances. It moves you in the direction of that dangerous border between “halal” and “haram”. It may even move you in the direction of the one sin that Allah will never forgive, the sin of “syirik”.

Rejecting Valentine’s Day is therefore not only a matter of sentimental inconvenience. It is a matter of keeping us as far away as possible from a sin or sins that we may find hanging forever around our necks after we die.

Salam.
I am now at KLIA, waiting to my connecting flight to KK in about another 4 hours. Plenty of time I have here.. so lets discuss about this very common thing to happen--bruises.

This post is dedicated to Mak yang once send me a SMS saying "Iffah, apa sebab lebam-lebam di kaki selain daripada kena gigit hantu?"

hehehe.. lawak la mak ni. orang yg tengah stress study untuk exam pun teketawak habis baca msg tu.

Bruises @ lebam2 in malay, with its scientific name; PURPURA: ecchymosis (for large purpura)/petechiae pacthes (for small purpura).. characteristic of this purpura?-- purple colored spot under the skin/ mucus membrane (eg: inner lip). okay, this purple spot actually is clotted bloo which leaks from underlying blood vessels. So simply saying; anybody who has this patches means the underlying blood vessels is injured.

What may cause purpura?
1. blunt trauma-- many got traumatized during sleep and woke up with purpura; claiming it as ghost bite.
2. fragile blood vessel-usually happen in the elderly.
3. inflammed blod vessel
4. platelet dysfunction; eg: hepatic patient
5. drugs which may interfere with blood clotting system.

*hmmm..have to use the WC. i'll continue later!

Psycho-Somatic Disease?

MY BODY. MY BRAIN.

Ever heard of disease not caused by real-bodily-etiology.. but of psychological stress? Its kinda amazing, of how our body can develop real disease without real defect.

Like.. when we got stressed out; headache came, so as feeling of heartburn, abdomen suddenly feels bloated, each and every joints feel painful, heavy menstruation, painful muscle, frequent urination, sleeplessness, backache, heart beating fast, breathlessness, sudden panic attacks, choking sensation..

Yup, of course the brain which interprets stress is connected to the trunk and the limbs, but in most normal times of our lives, the psyche and the organs live really happily together..no disease caused by the psyche or the opposite.

But sometimes this happy couple faces hard time, where disharmony occur.. causing such symptoms as stated above. Of course it isn't connected directly, but there are processes in between the 2, but naahh..not my concern of writing them here.

We (our class.me.) just took a case about IBS (Irritable Bowel Sydrome).. a disease which occurs in 20% of population worldwide. Affecting the bowel aka gut.

Related to what we discussed above, this IBS patients didn't have any actual pathology in their gut, but come seeking help from the docs, claiming they have abnormality in their guts, forcing the docs to investigate them all out, even if test results had confirmed no abnormalities.

Our doctor told us a story about his annoying patient, 27 years old male, who had been stalking him for 4 years now..

Patient came in the first time with symptoms as alternating diarrhea and constipation.

After doing appropriate investigations on him, our doctor diagnosed him as having IBS, which.. the patient is not satisfied with, even with solid evidence and convincing assurance.

Patient then requested colonoscopy .. (a tube with camera which will be introduced from below to see the internal wall of the gut.. which can be very painful, only done by highly trained colonoscopist .. carrying risks of complication) which, clearly, in his case, is very much unnecessary, and of course..as any other doctor will react, our doctor refuses.

Unsatisfied, this anxious, fragile and scared patient sees other doctor in a private clinic and at last .. done with the colonoscopy.

The result, as very much expected.. -ve for any abnormality.

Patient got happy and his symptoms disappear. (the brain is relieved, thus the body express the health).

Unfortunately, after a while, he came back to see our doctor and complaint,

"oohh doctor, after the colonoscopy, i felt that my hole down there has getting bigger, and i couldn't really control the motion.." (this is funny~)

Doing, PR (per rectal exam--introduce your finger into it and check for the tone, or any mass).. everything is again normal ..

and yet again, patient requested a surgery to tighten the hole-which-have-gotten-bigger. Our doctor refuses. Again. Patient went to other private clinic. Again. Succeeded performing the surgery. Got normal. Brain relieved. Again. Another unfortunate day.. The same patient come to see our doctor , and this time.. complaining of over-tightening-down there-hole.. (again.. this patient really knew how to make jokes :p)

Got the picture? These patients of IBS is entirely normal but continue seeking for help.

The stressful life keeps showing organic symptoms so long as the stressor still existed.

So the moral of the story is: avoid stress. Get a healthy living. Enjoy life while could. Live life the fullest.

*continuous unrelieved stress and depression may lead to severe disorder.. people even committed suicide and homicide. (Nauzubillah semoga dijauhkan)

Exhausted after driving all night, a man decided to pull over to get some sleep. He had just nodded off when there was a knock in the window. He opened his eyes to a jogger, who asked, "Do you have the time please?"

"Its ten past eight."

"Thanks," said the jogger and ran off.

The man dozed off again but suddenly there was another knock.

"What time is it?" asked a hiker.

"Twenty-five past eight," said the man, getting slightly annoyed.

To avoid being asked again, the man put a sign in his window that read,

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS!" and settled down to rest.
But just as he was drifting off into a blissful sleep, there was yet another knock in the window.

Scowling, the man looked out.

Doa dan Harapan

Assalamualaikum.

As a human being, we absolutely aren't able to hold on to ourselves constantly together all the time. There'l be time to break down and cry the eyes out.

There will be time for us to face a partner to share what's buried deep inside. Such secrecy, such burden on keeping something only on our own could kill. the soul. the mind.

What should it feels like when we've done the best we could to make it happen, we've pray thousands times a day.. we sacrifice so many things to make it work, and it still just wont work?

The feeling of wanting to shout out so loud..

Ada empat macam kemungkinan yang salah satunya harus berlaku; iaitu:

1) diberikan kepada orang berdoa sesuatu yang lebih baik dari yang dimintanya, atau
2) dihindarkan daripadanya mala petaka, atau
3) akan disempurnakan di akhirat, atau
4) diampuni dosanya.

Dan Tuhanmu berfirman:

“..Aku perkenankan permohonan orang yang berdoa apabila ia berdoa kepadaKu. Maka hendaklah mereka menyahut seruanku (dengan mematuhi perintahKu), dan hendaklah mereka beriman kepadaKu supaya mereka menjadi baik serta betul. ”
Al-Baqarah, ayat 186

"Berdoalah kepadaKu, nescaya akan Kuperkenankan bagimu. Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang menyombongkan diri dari menyembahKu akan masuk neraka Jahannam dalam keadaan yang hina dina."

Rasulullah bersabda:
"Berdoalah kepada Allah, pada hal kamu yakin dengan di perkenankanNya. Dan sesungguhnya Allah Taala tiada terima doa dari hati orang yang lalai yang cuai"

Permohonan adalah doa, dan doa hendaklah disertai dengan harapan.
Harapan ialah baik sangkan kepada Allah untuk doa kita diterimaNya.
Berdoa sebanyaknya yang mana apabila ia dikumpulkan semuanya mungkin sampai ke awan langit dari sebelah atasnya, dan kalau dihimpunkan semuanya mungkin sampai memenuhi bumi dari pihak bawahnya.

"Barangsiapa menghampiri kepadaKu sejengkal, Aku hampiri kepadanya sehasta. Dan barangsiapa mendekatiKu sehasta, Aku hampiri kepadanya sedepa. Danbarangsiapa yang datang kepadaKu berjalan, Aku datang kepadanya dengan berlari. Dan barangsiapa menemui Aku dengan kejahatan yang memenuhi bumi, pada hal ia tiada sekutukan Aku dengan sesuatu, Aku menemui dia dengan keampunan yang memenuhi bumi."

D.OB, P.O.B: June, 21, 1929-- El-Halawat, Egypt
Death: March, 30, 1977-- London, England
Profession: Singer, Movie-actor

Aik? Why suddenly letak biography Abdel Halim Hafiz ni? Siapa dia?

I have been attending lectures in the faculty, and up until now, there has been two doctors mentioning this talented singer's name. They say: " How can you be staying in Egypt and not knowing Abdel Halim Hafez?".. okay.. So I decided to read about this special man with mellow, resonant voice with subtle vocal style; who is also known as The Dark Nightingale, Egyptian Elvis, or so called Egyptian Micheal Jackson. To say in short, he is a LEGEND.

Abdel Halim Hafez was born orphan; his mother died of complication while giving birth to him. His father, unfortunately died 5 months later (cause of death not mentioned). He was raised by his aunt in Cairo. His musical abilities was seen at 11 years of age, joined the Arabic Music Institute in Cairo, graduated from the Higher Theatrical Music Institute, and becoming more active in performing in public afterward.-- I'll skip the details about his life here.--

At the age of 11, he was said to have contracted Bilharzial disease, also called- Schistosomiasis.

Some BIOGRAPHY OF SCHISTOSOMES (the one famous in Egypt)

Name: Schistosoma Haematobium a.k.a blood flukes
Geographical distribution: Nile Valley, parts of Africa and Asia
Birth: From eggs laid in human urinary bladder, and hatch in diluted urine
Death: 24 hours after hatching if there's no snail-- as their shelter.
Profession: Parasit-ing

This parasites start penetrating human body through skin (after swimming in the Nile river) or through drinking the water. Early symptoms are; itching and papular eruption. They are circulated in the blood, and finally gets into the liver and becomes adult. When they found their spouse, the female will be laying eggs in the urinary bladder-- will then pass in the urine.-- then will hatch, got into the snail, and penetrate human body, all repeating over again.

In urinary schistosomiasis, complications include anemia, stone formation and cancer. In hepatic (liver) schistosomiasis, complications: hepatic fibrosis, anemia, dysentery (diarrhea with blood and mucus)

What are considered good attitude?, and what are those considered bad? On whose or which perspective should we look upon to weigh this matter?

Some look at certain religion to accuse the believer are as bad. We don't judge people by his religion, as the world shows-- there are as many as thousands of bad Muslims all over the world and there are also good Jews. Many muslims are bad, but does it mean Islam preaching is bad? Not at all..

We see a person based on individual attitude, morals, behaviour.

Terjemahan hadith nabi:
"Dari al-Nawwas bin Sim'an radiyallahu anh dari Nabi saw sabdanya: Kebaikan itu adalah elok budi pekerti. Dan dosa itu ialah apa yang tergetar dalam diri engkau dan engkau benci bahawa di lihat oleh manusia kepadanya. Diriwayatkan oleh Muslim.

Dan dari Wabisat bin Ma'bad radiyallahu anh katanya: Aku datang kepada Rasulullah saw lalu ia bertanya: Engkau datang bertanya dari kebaikan? Aku menjawab: Ya! Ia berkata: Mintalah fatwa hati engkau. Kebaikan itu ialah apa yang mententeramkan diri engkau kepadanya dan mententeramkan juga kepadanya hati. Dan dosa itu ialah apa yang bergetar dalam diri dan ragu dalam dada, sekalipun berfatwa kepada engkau oleh manusia dan mereka telah berfatwa dengan menyalahinya. Hadith hasan, Kami meriwayatkannya dalam Musnad dua imam, iaitu Ahmad bin Hanbal dan al-Darimi dengan sanad yang baik."

Sometimes we face such situations, which force us to do improper deeds. Family of a non-muslim patient come to us from god-knows-where, crying hysterically, suddenly hugging us, mentioning my brother just died~.. panic.
Should we say; ohh dont touch me, I'm not to be touched by non-mahram..? <-- am not being a liberalis here.. just creating a situation As our prophet advice, on how to differentiate good deeds from bad; ask yourself. ("Mintalah fatwa hati engkau"). Think about the how clear the hukm states this or is it syubhah or else?..when it is syubhah; follow your heart, it's your call, because as long as your heart are in peace --you are in the right track. Finally here.. just something I got from the lecture today:

~just a quote to ponder~

I just accidentally ran into this quote while downloading notes from my mail. Most of us tend to react to some problem we face, as if its the end of the world..as if there's nothing to be done, except there's really nothing to be done; like curing a terminal cancer patient.

Setiap penyakit ada penawarnya, setiap dugaan ada hikmahnya, setiap masalah ada penyelesaiannya. Oh, tak setuju dengan setiap penyakit ada penawarnya. Tapi yang ke2 n ke3 tu betullah, dan bukan semua penyelesaiannya adalah marah! Knocking nails with hammer~ See things positively, think effectively, weight the pros and cons before acting. Biasanya kalau kita mengamuk sebab terlampau ikutkan hati, akhirnya kita mesti akan menyesal, but there's no turning back.

Allah takkan uji kita dengan sesuatu yang kita tak mampu kita hadapi. Betul? and when there comes time when we feel like the whole world is on our shoulder, we'll know how strong we are to be able to face em. Its in our head..its the matter of how we color our life.

"They live in the past...", kata doctor Gamal, doctor yang bagi lecture acute and chronic liver failure pagi tadi.

"They took herbs that were never proven non-toxic, to treat their diseases instead of taking drugs that were prescribed by their doctors.."
Doctor ni tengah cerita pasal rakyat Egypt yang masih tak mau berubah, masih nak ikut cara orang lama, walaupun teknologi perubatan sekarang dah hebat. Masalah sakit jantung, hati, buah pinggang, semuanya nak pakai herba-herba yang dijual di pasaran. Yang diberi doctor semuanya tak baik bagi dorang. Hasilnya, bukan saja sakit tak baik-baik, malah makin teruk, di tambah lagi dengan toxic yang dibawa oleh herba. "All herbs are toxic until proved otherwise!".. doctor tambah lagi.."and to be fair, people like this also exist in your countries".. with his index finger pointing at us, the Malaysian, Saudian and Syrian students.

"People who work in the pharmacy aren't pharmacist at all, but then still they act like they knew things better than doctors who prescribe drugs for patients to buy.."
Pekerja-pekerja farmasi di sini katanya suka mengubah prescription doctor kepada drugs yang lebih mahal, kononnya kesannya lebih 'kuat'.. sedangkan dorang xtau pun history penyakit patient tu. Kesian kepada mereka yang tiada latarbelakang perubatan yang taktau bahaya yang dorang bakal hadapi.. Egypt..Egypt..duit punya pasal, hak orang tak terjaga.

"Cadaveric organ transplant is done in Iran, a country of high Muslim population.. also in Indonesia and Malaysia, both with high Muslim population.. even in Saudi Arabia, the highest Muslim population in the world do cadaveric transplant.. but it is not done here in Egypt, because some Syeikh said its haram".. doctor tambah lagi dengan penuh emosi. Marah betul doctor dengan negara dia sendiri.

Cadaveric organ transplant ni pemindahan organ dari 'brain-dead' patient.. prognosis untuk pesakit survive dengan new cadaver organ ni sampai 60-80%-- which is big indeed. Sebelum patient yang 'brain-dead' tadi kena declare dead, they took away the organs, atas kebenaran pesakit atau waris la..sebab brain-dead patient is dead indeed.
Tapi still, its not done in Egypt, atas ethical issues, macam masalah pengguguran baby dikalangan mangsa yang diperkosa.
Patutnya masalah ni dimusyawarahkan la oleh ulama seluruh dunia, ambil satu persetujuan. Macam mana boleh di negara Islam ni, benda ni haram.. tapi di negara Islam lain, benda ni dah lama dijalankan. Macam Islam ni kena ubah hukum pulak dimana tanah dipijak. betul ke?

Lapang jugak rasa hati bila ada penduduk di sini cakap kebenaran yang dia tak suka pasal negara dia. Sebab selama ni bila kami komen pasal salah silap negara ni, dorang sentiasa backing..alasan itu ini, walaupun tau, memang dah terang lagi bersuluh salah. Semoga ramai lagi yang develop kesedaran macam ni!
